“This is, as far as I know, the first allegation that someone in a ban state is providing an abortion in direct violation of abortion laws,” said Marc Hearron of the Center for #ReproductiveRights.

In a handful of cases, charges have been brought against people who provided #abortion pills to relatives, either with their knowledge or without.

…The bans on abortions around the country have largely relied on the threat of prosecution, w/few instances in which #criminal cases have actually been filed. #Abortion providers in #Texas & other states w/ abortion bans ceased operations after the decision. #Women seeking abortions have instead had to travel to states where the procedure remains legal or have received abortion medication through the mail.

The stmnt said that she had been “charged with the illegal performance of an abortion,” which has been a second-degree #felony since the state’s near-total #AbortionBan took effect in 2022. She was also charged w/practicing #medicine without a license.

Court records released late Monday indicated that a person who worked w/Ms. Rojas, Jose Ley, 29, was also arrested & charged w/the same offenses.

Since Texas brought its near-total abortion ban, no one has studied the statewide effect on people undergoing pregnancy complications. So @ProPublica did it, purchasing and analyzing seven years of hospital discharge data. The findings: The rate of sepsis shot up more than 50 percent for those hospitalized in the second trimester of pregnancy. “This is exactly what we predicted would happen and exactly what we were afraid would happen,” said Dr. Lorie Harper, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist in Austin.

#Menopause triggers more changes than is often appreciated, and it can be challenging to sort out numerous health and mental health conditions related to hormonal changes, or due simply to aging, genetics or other factors. This psychologist and neuroscientist discusses all this frankly and even humorously, exploring topics that male-dominated medical fields often shy away from.

Wise & Well · The Brain on Menopause: Reality vs. Myth - Wise & Well - MediumBy John Kruse MD, PhD

In Alabama - where there’s a total abortion ban - the rate of infant mortality is skyrocketing.

“It spiked to 7.8 deaths per 1,000 live births – up from 6.7 in 2022 – with 449 newborns dying before reaching their first birthday”

Lawmakers seem to only care about the fetus until its birth (if they ever cared at all).

Once the baby is born - they couldn’t care less what happens to it (or its mother).

People are being forced to carry pregnancies they can’t mentally, physically or financially handle. They aren’t given proper pre-natal care. Many can’t access care at all.

What possible benefit is there to forcing people to carry babies to term - only to let them die soon afterwards?

You’re risking the life of the mother AND baby unnecessarily - and then you turn around and claim to be “pro life”

These bans are the opposite of pro-life.

They’re costing lives. They’re causing untold amounts of trauma. They can also cause medical emergencies that impact a person’s future ability to get pregnant.

They can disproportionately harm disabled people who may have additional reasons for not being able to safely carry a pregnancy to term

They can also result in people becoming trapped in abusive relationships and situations - because they are too sick/pregnant to leave.

Abortion IS healthcare. Bodily autonomy should be a human right for all.

Alabama Political Reporter · Opinion | Post-birth abortions? Alabama is specializing in themAlabama lawmakers know that hundreds of newborns are dying each year. They know that many could be saved with basic care.

I’m shocked by how misinformed the men in my life are on abortion bans. Most of them support a woman’s right to choose - but they don’t understand that the bans put lives at risk. One said to me “I’m sure they don’t impact women who WANT to start a family”.

They do - and here’s why:

Abortion bans put lives at risk. When you criminalize abortion - you’re practically criminalizing pregnancy. It sounds harsh - but women have been arrested for having miscarriages. Doctors face jail time for intervening to save a woman’s life if she’s having pregnancy complications.

When a woman is having an early miscarriage - you can’t tell whether it happened naturally or was induced. The police should not be involved in making that call. Yet if they have ANY reason to suspect you wanted to end that pregnancy? You could be arrested.

Have an ectopic? An abruption? A fetus with lethal anomalies? Doctors are going to hesitate before intervening even IF your life is at risk. They have to consult the legal department, they have to fear for their licence and the possibility of jail time.

Pregnancy is NOT a health neutral state. Anything you can be at risk for - you’re higher risk for in pregnancy. When things go sideways - it can happen incredibly quickly. Waiting to intervene can and does cost the life of the mother AND the baby.

Doctors are also fleeing states with abortion bans - leaving women in those states with even less access to qualified care. They don’t want to practice somewhere that the government is going to dictate what happens to their patient. They don’t want to worry about criminal charges.

All of this adds up to bad news for women - many of who WANT children but will choose not to become pregnant in the face of these archaic and dangerous laws. It’s not “your body my choice”. It’s “my body my choice”. Until people realize that - we continue to be in danger.

There is only one person in the world with the right to decide whether a given pregnancy is carried to term or not. And that person is the woman who's pregnant.

Let's make sure that every member state of the EU recognizes and respects her right.

#Selzer’s poll shows independent #women backing #Harris by 28pts, & women 65+ backing her by 2-1. Speaking to Tim Miller of The Bulwark, Selzer speculated about what might have driven these numbers. “It was over the summer that #Iowa’s 6-week ban on #abortion went into effect after all the court challenges were taken care of,” she said. Now, she said, people have been “living with it for a while.”

(#Trump ended up winning #Iowa by >9 points.) In 2020, her poll again showed Trump ahead by 7pts, which was both close to the final tally &, in retrospect, a sign that #Biden’s margins in neighboring states like #Wisconsin would be much thinner than other polls were indicating.

So many of us were anxious to see how big Trump’s lead would be this time, & the fact that #Selzer instead found him #losing came as a shock.

We’ve Been Underestimating the Scale of #Women’s #Fury

By Michelle Goldberg

On Saturday evening I was watching a movie w/my family when a text message made me gasp so hard that it scared them. “What happened?” my husband asked, worried. “Nothing bad,” I said, slightly overcome. “It’s just … #AnnSelzer has #Harris up 3 in #Iowa!”
