It wasn’t just terror: The Nazis won the cultural battle in a year.

For the National Socialists, everything was political.

All forms of culture — from theatre and cinema to painting and literature — were turned into instruments of propaganda and antisemitism.

Oliver Goldsmith's comedy She Stoops to Conquer is performed for the first time, at the Covent Garden Theatre in London.

Initially the play was titled Mistakes of a Night and the events within the play take place in one long night. In 1778, John O'Keeffe wrote a loose sequel, Tony Lumpkin in Town.

The Blue Flame, a four-act play by George V. Hobart and John Willard after Leta Vance Nicholson, opens at the Shubert Theatre on Broadway before a year's U.S. tour. Though described by a critic as "one of the worst plays ever written," it is a commercial success, largely due to Theda Bara as the central character of a vamp.

Henrik Ibsen's play Ghosts (published in 1881) achieves a single London performance, its English-language stage première (at the Royalty Theatre). To evade the Lord Chamberlain's Office's censorship, it has to be staged privately by the Independent Theatre Society, but still attracts strong criticism on moral grounds.

The producers of "Hamilton" have canceled plans to bring the hit show to the Kennedy Center next year after Trump's takeover of the institution. “Our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center,” Jeffrey Seller said in a statement. The musical, for which tickets were yet to go on sale, was scheduled to be staged March 3-April 26 2026. Others who have canceled performances there include actor Issa Rae, singer Rhiannon Giddens, author Louise Penny and rock band Low Cut Connie. Here's more from @AssociatedPress.

New York performances of the play Sapho curbed for immorality. It is based on an 1884 French novel of the same name by Alphonse Daudet and an 1885 play by Daudet and Adolphe Belot. It was at the center of a sensational New York City indecency trial involving the play's star and producer/director, Olga Nethersole.

I feel like I talk a big game about 'Degooglifying' and moving away from proprietary services, but it's really fucking hard. In the arts, everything runs off Google because 1) its free 2) everyone is poor 3) the people who took arts subjects at school didn't get taught about tech in the level of detail that is required to understand how to Degooglify in 2025. I am an anomaly in that I took ComSci and Theatre A-Levels, but we need more solidarity uniting artists and compscis.
